What to do when you receive your computer

We are very excited you decided to make your computer purchase from Merk America. It gives us great honor that you would put your trust in us. Now that you have your computer in hand, we would like to talk about the next steps you should take regarding your shiny new system.

First, we would like you to check for any damage that may have occurred to the box while shipping. Your Dell, HP, IBM or Lenovo system are fully insured during shipping both domestically and internationally through Merk America so you can feel secure knowing any problems will be covered. If, at this point, there is no damage proceed to open the box.

Once you have your box opened, we would like to direct you to turn it on and power up. At this time, we would also like you to check for any system damage. If your system is refurbished, it’s possible there may be a slight blemish or scratch. Although rare, it’s still in the classification of the refurbished product so do not be alarmed.

After boot up you may or may not have been taken to a setup screen, or it could boot directly into the windows desktop. If you boot up and it asks you to setup the computer, please go through the steps listed as directed by Microsoft. It will ask you for your time zone and to setup an account with Microsoft. If you do not intend to use Microsoft services, you can choose to skip that step. Once you get to the windows desktop screen, you should connect to the internet. You can do that by clicking the link in the bottom right toolbar which shows the Wi-Fi white rainbow icon. This link will pop up a box to show you available internet connections. Please choose the connection you are looking for and enter the password if applicable. Once you are connected to the internet we can proceed to the registration page. Please note YOU DO NOT NEED A PRODUCT KEY. The dell software will recognize the Dell installed operating system and key. We ask that you open up the browser and go to http://support.dell.com or directly to the transfer page at https://www.dell.com/support/assets-transfer for a Domestic or International transfer.

From here you can transfer the warranty into your name. Please be advised the warranty can take up to 14 days to transfer per the Dell website page. (Generally, the transfer process takes up to 10 business days, but international transfers can take up to 15 business days, so it's a good idea to transfer the warranty before you actually need support.)

At the warranty page, you should be entering the following for the company purchased from.

Merkamerica
Santa Monica, CA 90405

After this you should enter your details in the next box when requested, then hit submit to process the warranty.

You may or may not get a follow up email confirming the transfer. You are now registered!

The second step we also request is updating the drivers for your system. Sometimes the drivers come updated, and sometimes they need to be updated by the end user. We advise all customers check this just to be sure. You can do this by the following steps below.

Open http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04?c=us&l=en&s=dfb and allow Dell to auto detect your system. If you don’t want to let them detect your system, you can also enter your service tag into the box. If you don’t have your tag and you also do not want them to detect, you can browse for a product. See the image for specific box locations.

If you have popups blocked please check as it will ask permission for a popup window. Once you have the popup window, please download the requested file. From here it will install and run an auto detection file to check what updates your system needs. An alternative to this would be to download each system file individually. If you only update one file, we recommend it be the Bios. This file will allow your system to work with the latest drivers and software. The Bios is also coded into your motherboards CMOS chip to help communicate between software and hardware.

You can also download the latest Dell Update here (http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=HT6JC) which runs in the background of your system and informs you of the latest updates for your particular system.

One of the main questions we receive is where the backup operating system software can be found. Since 2016 Dell stopped supplying discs with their computers and has moved to an online system thus allowing the latest drivers be available to everyone anytime. The image below shows where this file can be found. In our next publication, we will talk about how to install the operating system through a USB Key.

We hope this has clarified the steps needed to setup your system. If you have any questions, please chat with us at http://www.merkamericaco.com or give us a call at 888.304.6664.
